What Motivates Me To Workout

How do we find the motivation to exercise. At the end of the day when that big fluffy couch seems to be calling your name and nothing looks more appealing, what is it that keeps us on track and motivated? 

The question came up today how do I motivate the individual and I started thinking about how do I motivate myself. Everyone is different and everyone needs motivation served to them on a different platter. What motivates one doesn't necessarily motivates the next. Some people need constant encouragement, others need a kick in the ass while some need to be told specifically what to do. I personally like so many others need the challenge and the goal. For years it was easy for me when I was wrestling, I needed to keep a certain weight and I always had to stay fit and lean. Now I have to find other ways to keep myself motivated and trust me, I know sometimes it's hard. 

There are literally hundreds of different ways to motivate yourself to exercise and I will give you a few examples of what has worked for me. Even I struggle sometimes to keep going but the most effective way to keep motivated for me is having a workout partner. Having that buddy on the same page as you challenging you to push hard and keep going always motivates me. I have had some great workout partners in the past and I miss training with them. 

Writing down my program and keeping track of it is also a great method for me. I track my results and week by week I check to see my improvements, and hey what better motivation is there then seeing results.

Caloric expenditure is one that has worked for me in the past as well. I know that you read tons of weight loss articles and they say don't count calories. Well how are you going to get the proper amount of calories you need and burn the proper amount without keeping track. Knowing what I need to burn in the day pushes me that extra little bit or keeps me on track so I don't expend to much.

Simple enjoyment out of exercise and having fun will keep anyone going. I wish I could workout with everyone I train all day everyday. If it wasn't for the fact that it takes away my concentration on the individual I would love to work out with them all. Having fun doing a group or bootcamp class has always been motivating for me. Lately I have been riding my new mountain bike and I love it. Doing something that keeps you moving while you are having fun can't be bad for you.

Magazines and the models inside have been an inspiration in the past for me. Sure Photoshop works some wonders and they are usually a couple days out from contest time but hey working hard to be that fit and having a goal is great motivation.

Internet articles, blogs, books any type of information and reading material is interesting for me and gets me to try new things or methods and different exercises. Sometimes reading what others have done and their success stories are very inspirational.

Setting goals and when you reach them reward yourself. It's always nice to get to a goal and it's even nicer to know that you are getting something for your hard work. I like to get some sort of little reward for every goal I achieve. Set your goals and set your rewards and get them often. 

Keeping my "lean clothes" around makes me work hard to fit into them and want to look good. With looking good comes feeling good and having those outfits I feel stellar in keeps me in track.

Stress relief is a great motivator for me. Some days I need to blow off some steam and putting some Metallica on my iPod a just tearing it up in the gym really clears my mind and drains the stress from my body and mind.

Clearing my head while I have been riding my bike has worked great as well. Again it's stress relief buy it really gives me time to think about other things and maybe just take in some scenery. 

Back in the wrestling days having a trainer or a coach around to push me helped wonders. I always tell my clients that even I would love to have a personal trainer for the motivation.

I like to keep pictures around of myself from when I have competed and seeing myself ripped let's me know that that guy is still in there and it is possible to be like that again. Also taking the before picture motivates me to get to my goal. Nothing feels better then looking in the mirror and seeing yourself in great shape and comparing it to where you were.

A couple other motivators that may work for you could be signing up for a 5 or 10 km race, not feeling bad from missing workouts, extending your life expectancy and being able to run and play with your grand kids one day. Weighing yourself and keep measurements. Not every day but once a week, trust me as you see the numbers going down you will be motivated.

However you chose to motivate yourself whether it be from taking those measurements, logging your workouts or reading motivational quotes, the feeling you get once you have reached a goal and people are noticing is priceless. Make and set your goals so they are achievable and realistic. You will reach them as long as you work at it and there is no better reward then feeling great and looking great and having others notice.

3. Find a partner, make friends, and socialize with other people who work out

Have you ever noticed that you usually make around the same amount of money as most of the people you associate with? The same is true about your level of fitness. If you associate with people who simply don't like working out, there is a good chance you won't like it either. So find a partner or start socializing with other people who enjoy working out and watch your workout motivation start to go way up.

4. Really admire your progress

As soon as you start seeing results don't be ashamed to admire them. Go ahead, take a look at yourself in the mirror and say "Wow! Great job!" Nothing gives you more workout motivation than results. Go ahead and reward yourself with a new pair of sexy shorts, some new jeans, new shirt or just some new clothes to show off that new sexy body of yours.

5. Never ever feel bad or look down on yourself.

I'm a strong believer of that which you focus on you will get more of. To keep that workout motivation going, always focus on what you like most about you, never the bad. By focusing on the good, your mind and body will give you more of it. Think or say to yourself "I look great today, going to look even better tomorrow!" You'll be amazed how well this works. What you think about, you will bring about. So always think about how great you look already.

So there you have a few bits of advice on how to keep that workout motivation going. I've had people ask me how I've managed to keep working out for so many years without losing my motivation. It does seem a little crazy that I have been working out for that long, but by following these tips, I have managed to keep that workout motivation going, and from ever going away.

We all dream amazing dreams and aspire to a better life but sadly they go no further. Our fantasies end up gathering dust as a result of the pressures of everyday life. Somehow we learn not to expect too much from life. As a result we expect just to survive, no wonder so many people turn to drink or drugs to get excitement.

And yet life can be so much better. We just need to learn to take more interest in our dreams and to aim for something more rewarding.

The obstacle most of us encounter is just one word: impossible. This word is hardly a word of motivation - quite the opposite in fact. We learn that a better life is too hard, that we cannot achieve it or we are not deserving of a sweeter life. How often do we hear the phrase 'It's impossible?'

But think about it, if everybody thought like that there would be little in the way of innovations. Human existence seems to depend on moving forward: we need to develop and invent. We need to break through barriers and move forward. Isaac Newton would not made his historic discoveries and Sir Francis Drake would not have sailed around the world if they had succumbed to the belief such things were impossible.

But sometimes the natural world also defies the impossible. Scientists have proved that the bumble bee cannot fly: it's wings are incapable of lifting the bee's large body. The only problem is that nobody has told the bee and it happily flies around in defiance of science.

Unlike the bumble bee, too many people have great dreams - outrageous dreams - and feel unable to achieve them The dreams become simply wishes and the dreamer fails to act on them. Sadly this leads to disillusionment and a refusal to dream at all. Even worse, the disillusioned dreamer then endeavours to undermine the aspirations of others.

It is such limiting assumptions and self-doubt that create a belief that achieving a better life is impossible. It is one thing to dream but another to have the drive to create goals and a plan to achieve what any others would deem to be impossible.

One way to overcome doubts about ambitious dreams is to set and achieve lesser goals on the way to the big dream.

Try this: take a piece of A4 paper. You could use a word processing program on your computer but pen and paper still seems more effective. Write down three columns and label them 'Easy,' 'Possible' and 'Impossible.' Now let your mind run wild. What would you really like to achieve? Write your dreams under each heading. Include those things you were going to work for over the next few weeks; don't worry that you might have completed them anyway, just put them under the 'Easy' heading.

By the end of this brain-storming session you should have three lists. One will show those things you wanted to do soon with a little effort, the next should itemize those goals that you know you can achieve if you pushed yourself and the last are those dreams you would love to achieve but are too afraid to attempt - the impossible goals.

Over the next few weeks, months and years keep this list in front of you and work towards the dreams you have written down. Start with those that you have marked 'Easy' and, when you have completed those, move onto the 'Possible' list. Once these goals are exhausted you will be ready to try the impossible.

The point of this exercise is twofold. Firstly there is something significant about writing dreams down, they somehow become more real and achievable. Secondly,your confidence will grow as you tick each goal off the list so that, when you reach the 'Impossible' category, your ultimate dreams will seem a lot less daunting.

It is important not to limit your imagination, to restrict the possible. You should aim high but work towards those ultimate goals a stage at a time. It does take work and it does take a lot of discomfort but the rewards are truly worth it. On the other hand, if you dream (and we all do) but stay comfortable and not exert yourself, you risk being disappointed with what life has to offer you.

Consider the advances we have made. Only one hundred years ago the idea of a man walking on the moon seemed fanciful. Flying between continents on a regular basis hardly seemed possible and, if you had told someone just fifty years ago that you could talk to someone the other side of the world instantaneously and see their face too, you would have been laughed at. Have a telephone the size of a cigarette packet in your pocket that you could use to ring anyone in the world? Forget it.

The truth is what seemed impossible years ago is accepted as everyday life now. And yet a few visionaries have made the impossible reality. Are you a visionary or will you accept your dreams as impossible?

Yes, Thomas Edison was quite right when he said that genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration. It will always take work to achieve a dream. The good things in life usually take effort and discipline but, unless you want to work for no purpose (and many people work just to be busy), you need to aim for something worthwhile. Make that something an exciting and worthwhile dream.

If you have ever started a physical exercise programme it is likely you will have heard the expression 'No pain, no gain.' This is very true not only in the gym but also when chasing a dream you may otherwise consider impossible.

I hope you are reading this article in a quiet, private place, because I'm going to ask you to be brutally honest. Not with me, but with yourself. Here's what I want you to think about: how fired up were you to start selling this morning?
Now, if you could barely answer that question in your mind without jumping out of your seat, then you might not need to keep reading. On the other hand, if you could barely drag yourself out of bed today, and someone just forwarded this piece to you because you look like you're about to take a long nap under your desk, you might try going over it a few times.
Most of us, however, are going to fall somewhere in between on any given day. We know that we have to be motivated if we're going to sell, but it's hard to be geared up and keep finding new business when things haven't been going that well, or if we've become a bit stale in our jobs. I know, because I've been there; what's more, I've seen it in hundreds of sales departments and bullpens throughout North America and the world. Salespeople want to find business and earn big commissions, but motivation is a daily struggle for a lot of them.
It doesn't have to be. In my years as a salesperson, manager, and trainer, I have noticed that there are several tools that the very best use to keep themselves fired up on a regular basis. And at the same time, I've noticed that these techniques aren't just hopeful - they are a necessity if you are going to break away from the pack. Becoming one of the biggest earners and selling means having the mental strength to make that extra call, find a new way to word your presentation, or spend that extra hour reading about better ways to sell. In other words, motivation.
Because you can't earn a lot of money in sales without a steady stream of willpower, and because it's something so many producers wrestle with, here are eight easy ways to keep yourself fired up and finding clients:
#1. Set a target. There's a reason that experts, authors, and sales trainers are always reminding salespeople that goals are motivating... because they are. Make sure you know exactly what and how much you're trying to sell, and you will work that much harder to sell it.
#2. Make things personal. At the same time, your goal means very little if the sales manager or supervisor gives it to you. For it to be motivating, it has to be something that you're willing to work to get. So ignore the steak knives and tropical trips, if those aren't your thing, and focus on what you really would love to get.
#3. Think short and long term. Every salesperson needs something in the near future to shoot for, along with some bigger dreams to work towards. Having a mix will keep you focused on the tough days, while still thinking far enough into the future to accomplish big things.
#4. Create reminders. The best way to stay committed to your goal is by putting up reminders of it around your workspace. My favorite technique is to build a "goal board" with pictures of things you'd like to buy or accomplish. It only takes a few minutes to put together, and it will continually remind you of what you're working so hard for.
#5. Find inspiration. Another good way to stay "up" is by reading success stories from superstar salespeople. Not only will these motivate you, but they'll often help you pick up new techniques that allow you to open more accounts and earn more money, meaning that you can reach your goals faster.
#6. Get out of the office. Or, if you really want to make an impact in your motivation, try getting out to the sales conference or seminar. You'll find new energy and focus while picking up tips and mingling with other committed sales professionals.
#7. Start a friendly competition. Why not find another salesperson and wager a steak dinner on this month's quota? Sometimes, a little friendly rivalry can go a long way towards pushing us to greater heights.
#8. Reward yourself. Remember to actually give yourself some sort of reward once in a while as you meet your short and long-term goals. As wonderful as selling is, it's a good idea to stop and enjoy what you've earned now and again. Not only will taking a break be good for your stress level, but also it can help motivate you to reach the next milestone.

Write Down Your Key Achievements: Most of us have a resume so that is a good place to start when developing a list of your achievements. Compiling this list will remind you that you have achieved many things in life and will continue to do so with the right positive attitude.

It is not uncommon for the business to drain our energy and motivation, regardless of how much we enjoy the business. If you do not take time to recharge your batteries and refresh your perspective it is easy to find yourself frustrated with your business.

That is why it is imperative to have a personal motivation plan in place. This means taking advantage of opportunities that will help you maintain your motivation. Here are few suggestions to help get you started.

Get Motivated Every Day. Zig Ziglar was once confronted about being a 'motivational speaker'. The guy said to him, "You guys come and get people hyped up and then you leave and the motivation goes away. It doesn't last, and then you have to get motivated again." Zig reminded the gentleman that baths are the same way but we think it is a good idea to take a bath every day! It is true that motivation doesn't last. We have to renew it each and every day. That is okay. It doesn't make motivation a bad thing. We simply have to realize that if we want to stay motivated over the long term, it is something we will have to apply to ourselves each and every day.

Attend a personal development workshop. Identify an area in your business or personal live that you would like to improve. At the beginning of each year, I determine what types of programs I want to attend and begin looking for them. I find that these sessions give me a short break from the daily grind of my business and help me see things from a different perspective. Training programs, night courses, or weekend seminars that focus on a specific topic can give you a much needed boost in your energy.

Have a vision for your life. The root word of motivation is 'motive'. The definition of motive is, 'A reason to act'. This is the cognitive or rational side of motivation. It is your vision. You have to have a vision that is big enough to motivate you. If you are making $50,000 a year, it isn't going to motivate you to set your goal at $52,000 a year. You just won't get motivated for that because the reward isn't enough. Maybe $70,000 a year would work for you. Set out a vision and a strategy for getting there. Have a plan and work the plan.

Join a Master Mind group. Meeting with other like-minded people can help you see your business from a different perspective. An effective group will have between six and eight members from a variety of industries and will usually meet several times a year. If you have the right chemistry between members, these meetings will not only help you improve your business, they will also motivate you to try new approaches and market your business differently.

Exercise. I am an avid runner and have completed two marathons and several half marathons. I occasionally find myself in a position when I cannot run for a period of time due to illness, injury, or the demands of work. Without fail, I notice a decrease in my personal motivation during these times. Regular exercise helps your body work more effectively and efficiently. Although I usually catch myself thinking about work related issues during my runs, I often notice that I develop more creative solutions when I am exercising.

Work hard enough to get results. You can build on your motivation by getting results. The harder you work, the more results you will get and the more results you get, the more you will be motivated to get more. These things all build on one another. If you want to lose weight, then lose the first few pounds. When the belt moves to the next notch you will get fired up to get it to the notch beyond that!

Take time off. It is not a badge of honor to state, "I'm too busy to take time off." In today's fast-paced business world, it is critical to take time off for vacation and rest and relaxation. Even a long weekend away from your business can be restful. A true vacation also means completely avoiding email and voicemail. Yes, you will have hundreds of messages to deal with when you return, but you will have a renewed focus and energy to do this.

Lastly, associate with positive people. I have made it a point in the latter part of my career to distance myself from negative individuals. They drain your energy, will not support your goals and desires, and do little to motivate you. On the other hand, positive and optimistic people will uplift your spirits and help you through challenging times.
